Enrichment Programs
Physical Education Program
The Rhythm and Moves physical education curriculum teaches students successful ways of moving so they enjoy physical activity while learning that being physically fit and healthy is good for their physical, emotional and social well-being. The highly qualified, professional and motivated educators engage each student – revealing their inner potential to embrace physical activity and life-long health and fitness. The expected outcomes of the program continue to evolve to address the changing needs regarding health and fitness in an ever-evolving society.
Health and fitness concepts are introduced throughout each unit, focusing on individual health and fitness that will enhance performance of the specific movement or sport being taught. The foundation of their curriculum is based on Laban’s Movement Education Principals and the TGFU (Teaching Games for Understanding) Model for teaching sport skills and concepts. The general objectives of each lesson are based on the SHAPE National Standards for physical education kindergarten – eighth grade.
Our curriculum provides students with experiences where they have the opportunity to think critically about their fitness, and set lifelong goals for an active lifestyle. Our physical education classroom, students develop the crucial tools needed early on for a healthy and active lifestyle after graduation.
Music Program
The Rhythm and Moves music education curriculum teaches students the fundamentals of music theory, composition and history. Students learn to apply these concepts to develop their instrumental and vocal performance skills. The highly qualified, professional and motivated educators provide a music rich experience that will help develop creative expression and positive growth of their mind, body and spirit. The foundation of our curriculum utilizes McGraw-Hill’s Spotlight on Music, which uses music from around the world to teach music concepts and standards. Throughout the curriculum, content activities are directed to develop the students’ intrinsic motivation toward lifelong music appreciation and basic musicianship.
The general objectives of each lesson are derived from the California Visual and
Performing Arts Standards for music education.
At the elementary level our curriculum focuses on reading, notating and performing
simple rhythms with body percussion and instruments and simple melodies with
instruments combined with their voice. Beginning in third grade students will focus on
reading, notating and performing melodies in treble clef on the recorder and other
instruments and singing and performing with instruments in parts and harmonies.
Choir Program
All students in grades 3 through 8 are invited to join the SCS Choir, led by our Parish Choir Director, Troy Killorn. This is a wonderful opportunity to develop your singing talents, contribute to our parish community, and grow in faith through music. Choir practice on Mondays gives the group a chance to prepare for the upcoming Wednesday Mass. Mr. Troy helps students with their vocal technique, as well as ensuring they are ready to perform the hymns for the service each week.
Art
Our teachers embed Art into lessons throughout the week. Art will be connected to writing, reading, science, social studies, and even math!
